Walk through the cherry blossom tunnel at Aoyama Cemetery and visit the cemetery of great people
Aoyama Cemetery in Minami-Aoyama is a metropolitan mausoleum that opened in 1874. In the past, this place had a residence under the Aoyama family, which supported the Tokugawa family from the Mikawa period and in the Edo period, the Minokuni-gunjo Domain (present-day Gujo Hachiman, Gifu Prefecture). The name "Aoyama" is also derived from the name of Mr. Aoyama.
The 26-hectare area is the largest of all the mausoleums in Tokyo. Although it is a place where many graves gather, the sidewalk which runs in and out of the park is popular as a walking place a little away from the hustle and bustle of the center of the city. In the park, more than 600 cherry trees, including Someiyoshino and Yamazakura, are planted, and in spring, the tree-lined streets are dyed in vivid cherry blossom colors. The scene where the left and right cherry trees form an arch is compared to the "tunnel of cherry blossoms".
It is basic to enjoy the cherry blossom viewing of Aoyama Cemetery on foot, but why not visit the graves of great people as you walk around? In this mausoleum, there are the graves of many great men who make their name in The History of Japan. For example, in the entertainment industry, Ichikawa Danjuro is a famous site of the Kabuki world. If you are a novelist, you will find the hakuho school's representative writer, Naoya Shiga, who has works such as "In the Castle's Saki, and Shinichi Hoshi, who was called the god of short stories." Politicians include Toshimichi Okubo, who laid the foundation selves for the new Meiji government as one of the three outstanding figures, and Shinpei Goto, who led a bold reconstruction plan that led the foundations of present-day Tokyo after the Great Kanto Earthquake, as well as as foreign ministers and interior ministers.
Please visit the graves of great people who have been active in various areas while feeling the atmosphere of spring in the cherry blossoms in full bloom, and think about the history of Japan.
