Mori Art Museum "Roppongi Crossing 2022 Exhibition: Coming and Going Okay!"

"Roppongi Crossing" is a series of exhibitions that have been co-curated by the Mori Art Museum since 2004 as a fixed-point observational exhibition that provides a comprehensive overview of the contemporary art scene in Japan once every three years. In this seventh installment, we will introduce 22 Japan artists born in the 1940s ~ 1990s. This exhibition will be a crossings-in of creative activities, from artists who are already remarkable internationally to up-and-coming young artists who are expected to play an active role in the future.
The prolonged coronavirus pandemic has drastically changed our lives, and various events that were previously difficult to see have become apparent in Japan society. I have come to reconsider the familiar things and living environment that I used to accept as a matter of course, and I have become strongly aware of the existence and diversity of neighbors living together in these turbulent times. In the future, as the flow of people recovers and new cultures are expected to develop, it will be necessary to reconsider the fact that various ethnic groups coexist in the current "Japan" and that the history and culture painted in this land are actually already colorful. What kind of future can we imagine and create together?
The subtitle "Coming and Going Oh Rai!" expresses the desire to regain the movement of people who have been interrupted by the coronavirus pandemic, while reaffirming the fact that diverse people and cultures coexist in the present Japan after repeated exchanges and exchanges with different cultures throughout history, and after a complicated past.
In this context, I would like to reexamine what Japan contemporary art and creation are from a broad perspective and think together with you about tomorrow.
