Maki General Planning Office 60th Anniversary Exhibition "Vernacular Humanism/People, Society, and Architecture"
From the 1960s to the present, Maki General Planning Office has been involved in 145 projects in Japan and abroad, while facing the relationship between cities and architecture. This exhibition uses this journey as a clue to re-examine what they have delivered to society through the act of architecture, and what they can play a role in the future.
The title "Vernacular Humanism" comes from the architectural philosophy that the founder, Fumihiko Maki, has been repeating for many years. Through 60 years of practice, we demonstrate our attitude of viewing architecture not just as a form, but as an activity that creates spaces for people to live, gather, and build relationships that are close to the human body, behavior, and emotions.
The exhibition consists of models, panels, videos, etc., and introduces the state of architecture in society that has been discovered through past practices, as well as from the perspectives of dialogue with the environment and people. The venue, BLUE FRONT SHIBAURA TOWER S, is the latest work designed by our company and completed in 2025, and is a building that condenses our past ideas and technologies. Tracing the trajectory of 60 years in that space is not only a retrospective of the past, but also an attempt to open our perspective from the present to the next era.
