Minato Ward Cultural Property Seminar 4th Session: 'Transportation'
Reliving Edo through Minato Ward's Cultural Properties ~ Exploring the spirit and systems that supported 260 years of peace Using the cultural properties that live in Edo as clues, we interpret the spirit and systems of Edo through five themes.
The theme of the fourth session was "Transportation." After entering Edo, Tokugawa Ieyasu expanded Edo Castle and developed highways and waterways used for sankin-kotai (changing the emperor's attendance). The Tokaido route passed near the main gate of Zojoji Temple and through Satsunotsuji, where the Kosutsuba was located. This transportation network generated flows of culture, economy, and people, supporting long-term peace. We introduce temples, shrines, and gardens remaining in the Shiba area of Minato Ward, exploring Edo culture.
