Reliving the Edo Period Through Minato Ward’s Cultural Properties: Exploring the Spirit and Systems That Sustained 260 Years of Peace Using cultural properties still alive in Edo as our guide, we will explore the spirit and systems of the Edo period through five themes.

The theme of the fourth session is “Transportation.” After entering Edo, Tokugawa Ieyasu not only expanded Edo Castle but also developed the highways and waterways used for the sankin-kōtai system. The Tōkaidō route passed near the main gate of Zōjō-ji Temple and through Fudanotsuji, where public notice boards were posted. This transportation network fostered the flow of culture, economy, and people, thereby supporting a long period of peace. We will explore Edo culture by introducing the temples, shrines, and gardens that remain in the Shiba area of Minato Ward.
