21_21 DESIGN SIGHT Exhibition "2121 Futures In-Sight" Exhibition

21_21 DESIGN SIGHT will hold the "2121 Futures In-Sight" exhibition from December 21, 2021. The exhibition director welcomes Michiaki Matsushima, an editor who has worked on a number of books and magazines looking ahead to the future of how technology can change human culture and lifestyles.

In English, good vision is described as "20/20 Vision". Our name "21_21 DESIGN SIGHT" was inspired by the desire for the future, which we wanted to be a place to look beyond that. Exactly 100 years after this exhibition begins in 2021--。 The concept of this exhibition began with the idea of thinking about the world 100 years later with the same number as the name of our activities.

Since ancient times, people have made various prophecies and predictions to capture the world that has not yet been seen, from tomorrow's weather to the prosperity of the country. In recent years, with the remarkable advancement of information analysis and measurement technologies, it may seem that more detailed predictions are possible. However, the future does not exist only as an extension of the past in the first place.

Today, we are experiencing a global pandemic and witnessing dramatic changes in everything from way of life, community, and communication methods to the way things think and values. This made us realize strongly how unknown the future is.

This exhibition aims to visualize not only the future through a tool called "Future Compass" but also to visualize the perspective of the future inherent in our works and creations that live in the present together with a variety of participants, including designers, artists, thinkers, engineers, and researchers. The diverse perspectives of the future born from thinking about the various timelines surrounding them from familiar beings to others that have not yet been seen, will gather at the venue and form a plural future like a thriving plant.

This exhibition, which demonstrates our very attitude of thinking about the future, aims to be an opportunity for us living in the present and the generation living in the future to cultivate a rich insight to create tomorrow together with design.
