Panasonic Shiodome Museum of Art "Oda Collection: Master of Scandinavian Modern Design: Poul Kjærholm Exhibition: Timeless Minimalism"

A chair is one of the most familiar tools for us. The form is a form that pursues a rational function for sitting, but it also has the autonomous beauty of a sculptural work. In particular, chairs created by outstanding architects and designers of the last century have become timeless masterpieces and have become increasingly popular in recent years.
Paul Kjærholm (1929~1980), introduced in this exhibition, is one of Denmark's leading furniture designers of the 20th century. When you think of mid-century Scandinavian furniture, you might think of warm wood-toned designs. However, Kjærholm is characterized by its rigorous design, which was unusual for its time, and made of hard materials such as stone and metal. Yet, each piece of furniture never gives a cold impression and brings a pleasant tension to the space in which it is placed. Kjærholm's work, which is condensed into a minimalist and clean form that never gets old, resonates well with Japan architecture and continues to be strongly supported by enthusiasts in Japan.
This exhibition is the first of its kind at a museum in Japan to cover Kjærholm's major works, centering on the collection of Professor Emeritus of Tokai University, who has been researching and collecting chairs for many years. With the cooperation of Higashikawa Town, Hokkaido, which owns the Oda Collection, approximately 50 pieces of furniture and related materials will be introduced, and guests will enjoy the design philosophy of Kjærholm and the beauty of sophisticated furniture in a venue configuration by up-and-coming architect Tsuyoshi Tane (ATTA).
