The National Art Center, Tokyo "Matisse: Free Form"
Henri Matisse (1869-1954), one of the greatest masters of the 20th century. He emerged in Paris as a central figure in Fauvism, characterized by bold expressions free from colors that were faithful to nature. In Nice, where he would spend most of his life, he energetically painted various models and objects in his studio, while Matisse worked on "kirigami-e," a technique in which colored paper is cut out with scissors and pasted on paper.
This exhibition focuses on the collection of the Musée Matisse in Nice, France, and introduces about 150 works and materials such as paintings, sculptures, prints, and textiles, with a focus on paper cutouts. Among them, "Blue Nude IV," a representative example of paper cutout, will be exhibited, and the large-scale work "Flowers and Fruits" is a must-see work that will be exhibited for the first time in Japan after restoration in France for this exhibition.
This exhibition also focuses on the Rosary Chapel of Vence, which Matisse worked on in his last years, which can be said to be the culmination of his artistic career, and introduces Matisse's supreme art, from architecture to interior decoration and vestments.
