Minato City Local History Museum Special Exhibition "Sweets in Life Exhibition"
Today's confectionery has a wide variety of shapes and flavors, pleasing people's eyes and tongues. In ancient times, it was considered a meal and sacred food for the upper classes such as emperors, aristocrats, and samurai families, but with the times, it changed by incorporating dim sum and Nanban sweets, and it became something that ordinary people ate on a daily basis. In the Meiji era, Western sweets, which had been eaten only in limited places such as Dejima in Nagasaki, spread to various places, and had a great influence on Japan's confectionery culture. When confectionery was mass-produced through mechanization, more people were able to enjoy it as it is today.
In this exhibition, we will look at the transition from the beginning of confectionery in Japan to the present, as well as introduce confectionery made as event food and seasonal traditions from ukiyo-e depicting annual events and festivals, confectionery-type sketch books, and confectionery wooden molds. In addition, from shopping guides from the Edo period and advertisements from the Meiji period onwards, we will follow the changes in confectionery shops in the port area and explore the relationship between people's lives and confectionery.
