Suntory Museum of Art "British Museum Hokusai - With Masterpieces of Japanese Handwritten Paintings"
Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849), one of the world's most famous Japanese artists, is one of the most famous Japanese artists in the late Edo period. Many works with unforgettable impacts, such as Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji and Hokusai Manga, are highly popular both in Japan and abroad.
As for the relationship between Hokusai and foreign countries, Monet, Degas, Van Gogh and other Impressionist and post-Impressionist painters are famous for their devotion to Hokusai and their influence on Japonisme, mainly in France, but there are many collectors and researchers in England, and the history of his love can be traced back to the 19th century. The British Museum houses many of Hokusai's masterpieces from several collectors, and the quality of the collection is among the best in the world. This exhibition focuses on Hokusai's works owned by the British Museum, and follows the transition of Hokusai's painting industry, along with masterpieces of japanese hand-drawn paintings. Among Hokusai's drawing activities for about 70 years, we will introduce how many masterpieces have been produced, focusing on the 30 years from the 60th birthday of his 60th birthday to his death at the age of 90. In addition, we will pay attention to the collectors who put Hokusai's works at the British Museum, highlighting their love of Japanese art.
