A New Hub for Comedy Opens in Roppongi! “YOSHIMOTO ROPPONGI THEATER,” a theater focused on sketch comedy, is weaving a new cultural tapestry
Roppongi, where diverse cultures intersect. On July 5, 2025, a new landmark of comedy was born in this neighborhood. Taking over the site of the “Haiyu-za Theater,” where many renowned actors have graced the stage over the years, “YOSHIMOTO ROPPONGI THEATER” opened as Yoshimoto Kogyo’s first permanent theater dedicated primarily to sketch comedy. The nine days from the opening on the 5th through the 13th were dubbed “Grand Opening Week,” during which sketch comedians—each with their own unique quirks—led by past champions and finalists of “King of Conte”—put on electrifying performances. What kind of future does this new cultural hotspot in Roppongi envision? We’ll take you on a tour of the theater and behind the scenes, guided by Yoko Seiza, Director of the East Japan Theater Division at Yoshimoto Kogyo, the company that established the venue.
The Theater's Opening and the Challenge of Attracting International Visitors
The Hall of Laughter is located right outside Exit 6 of the Roppongi subway station. Regarding the theater’s founding, Mr. Seiza explains, “While people tend to associate comedy with manzai, our company has many sketch comedians on staff. There had long been a suggestion that a theater focused on sketch comedy would be a good idea, and as momentum for this grew, various factors aligned, leading to the theater’s opening.”

From group live shows featuring new material by up-and-coming comedy duos to solo shows by veteran comedians, the rack by the entrance is lined with comedy-related flyers. The variety is so rich that just looking at them makes my heart race.
With the cooperation of “HUB Roppongi,” which is located adjacent to the theater, we held trial performances of “Yoshimoto Comedy Night OWARAI” for international visitors in October and December. The area near the lobby entrance was converted into a stage, allowing guests to enjoy the show while dining and drinking at “HUB Roppongi.” “Since there are many international visitors in Roppongi, one of this theater’s goals was to create a stage that both tourists visiting Japan and foreign residents living here could enjoy. While food and drink—other than covered beverages—are prohibited inside the theater, comedy shows overseas often allow food and drink. To create a show that audiences could enjoy while eating and drinking, we consulted with HUB and decided to hold the event in the lobby. The lineup features comedians known for performances that transcend language barriers, such as Wes P—who appeared on the international talent show *Got Talent*—and Koikuchi Ichikawa. We’ll hold preview performances in October and December, with the full-scale operation scheduled to begin in January 2026,” said Mr. Seiza.
The secret behind this sketch comedy space—which even comedians rave about—lies in the complete blackout.
Now, let’s finally head up the stairs on either side of the lobby and enter the theater. The theater has 300 seats and a capacity of 302 people. For a theater dedicated to comedy, this is a fairly large capacity.
To celebrate the opening, messages from comedians were displayed along the hallway leading to the theater. It’s a real treat for fans. We’ve even heard positive feedback from sketch comedians who’ve actually performed on stage here. “Everyone has been raving about this theater. They’ve even said they want to perform skits here all the time—it really made all the effort worth it (laughs),” said Seiza.
Although the theater has a fairly large capacity, the stage feels close from the seats. This means you’ll be able to fully enjoy the skits, taking in everything from the props to the performers’ expressions.
Since this theater was originally built for plays, it’s perfectly suited for comedy sketches. “For example, since the world-building is crucial in comedy sketches, blackouts are essential. A blackout is when you switch scenes by turning off the stage lights without lowering the curtain, but in a typical theater, light often seeps in through gaps, making it quite difficult to achieve complete darkness. In that regard, this theater can achieve complete darkness, so the audience can enjoy the performance from start to finish without the atmosphere being disrupted. In fact, we’ve received positive feedback from audience members who said, ‘It was easy to see,’” said Mr. Seiza.
Carefully crafted humor adds color to everyday life in Roppongi
As a special treat, we were given a tour of the backstage area this time. Although there was equipment set up there, I was impressed by how much more spacious it was than I had expected.
The sets—an essential part of comedy sketches—are brought to life through collaboration between the comedians and the theater staff. “In September, Bambino put on a family show for children called *The Great Adventure with Danson*. To ensure the children who came to the theater would love it, Bambino and the staff worked from morning till night, experimenting and refining their ideas until they created a set that looked like a forest. The performance took place on a Sunday morning, and about 100 children and their parents came to see it. While Roppongi is often associated with nightlife—and this theater primarily hosts evening performances—I think this show opened up new possibilities.”
Underneath the stage are the costumes and wigs used in the skits. It’s clear that a lot of preparation goes into making a skit work.
Comedians from all over the country, not just Tokyo, performed at the theater. During “Opening Week,” comedians from both the east and west gathered to perform a variety of comedy skits. “There were some combinations we’d never tried before, so it was a chance to discover something new,” said Seiza.
I felt that this isn’t just a comedy theater—it’s a place designed to present carefully crafted comedy sketches to the audience in the ideal setting. And I think the true value of this theater lies in its role as high-quality, everyday entertainment that you can drop by for at any time. Seiza suggested, “I think it would be great if people who work in the Roppongi area could just drop by after work. It’s close to the station, and the shows are about an hour long, so I’d be happy if you’d add it to your list of options for how to spend your time before heading home.” She continued, “Since Roppongi is full of tourist attractions, I also recommend stopping by for a ‘good laugh’ while you’re out sightseeing. Among the many forms of entertainment available, comedy shows are relatively affordable, and we’re confident in the laughs we deliver.
