A sauna space to rejuvenate body and mind has opened in Takanawa! Discover the world of retreats at “Takanawa SAUNAS”
Takanawa SAUNAS, which opened on the 5th floor of Newoman Takanawa, is a sauna facility based on the concept of “rest and recovery in the city.” Approximately three and a half years after the much-talked-about opening of Shibuya SAUNAS, this long-awaited second SAUNAS location opened in February 2026. The facility’s most distinctive feature is its unique sauna program held in the “Retreat” sauna room. You can enjoy a diverse range of retreats, including Aufguss and whisking, as well as a Herbal Retreat incorporating herbs, a Sound Retreat that guides you into a meditative state, and a Scrub Retreat that leaves your skin smooth and supple. Here’s a full report on this new sauna facility, where you can escape the daily grind and refresh your mind and body—all while staying right in the heart of the city.
Directly connected to Takanawa Gateway Station! Step into the sophisticated interior.
Newman Takanawa is a commercial complex that serves as the centerpiece of Takanawa Gateway City. Takanawa SAUNAS has opened on the 5th floor of its North Area. It’s almost directly connected to Takanawa Gateway Station. First, pass through the station’s ticket gates and head to the building on your right. Take the elevator or escalator—located just past the right-hand passageway—up to the 5th floor, and you’ll arrive at the Takanawa SAUNAS floor.
The overall production of Takanawa SAUNAS is led by manga artist Katsuki Tanaka, creator of *Manga Sa-do* and the driving force behind the recent sauna boom. The facility is designed as an urban sauna complex that expands upon the basic sauna experience—which includes the sauna room, cold plunge pool, and relaxation area.
First, store your shoes in a shoe locker. Use the wristband attached to your locker key to pay for purchases at shops, restaurants, and vending machines inside the facility; when you leave, you’ll settle your bill, including the admission fee. Both entry and exit are essentially self-service. After checking in at the entry kiosk, hold the QR code on your wristband up to the gate to enter.
The functional layout leads from the lounge facing the entrance to the separate men’s and women’s changing rooms and bathing areas. The facility is almost entirely barrier-free.
The first thing that catches your eye upon entering the facility is the aroma lab adjacent to the lounge. Essential oils extracted from herbs and wood chips using a distillation apparatus are used for treatments such as the löyly. It is extremely rare for an urban sauna facility to be equipped with a distillation apparatus. The scents are blended with an emphasis on the seasons, allowing visitors to enjoy natural aromas—not artificial fragrances—in the sauna rooms.
Monitors located throughout the facility display the schedule for the day’s retreats taking place in each sauna room. You can check this schedule and participate in any retreat that interests you.
Enjoy with All Five Senses! 5 Unique Men's Saunas
Inside the facility, signs and posters—which are commonly found in hot spring facilities—have been kept to a minimum, and the lockers feature a simple, minimalist design. By keeping all information to a minimum, the facility creates an environment where guests can relax intuitively. Amenities such as facial lotions are all provided by OSAJI, just like at Shibuya SAUNAS. Everything you need is provided—including hair dryers, of course, as well as hairbrushes, toothbrushes, and cotton swabs.
The text on the signage and the numbers on the lockers at Takanawa SAUNAS were designed by textile artist Keita Miyairi. His unique font highlights the facility’s distinctive character.
The bath area features five men’s and three women’s sauna rooms, as well as two types of cold plunge pools and hot tubs for both men and women. When you enter the men’s bath area, you’ll first be greeted by a circular cold plunge pool. This pool is designed so that water falls from above at irregular intervals. Use this iconic central cold plunge pool and the reclining cold plunge pool to cool down your body after the heat of the sauna.
The “SOUND” sauna room, which can accommodate up to 40 people, is equipped with a high-fidelity sound system compatible with high-resolution audio. Because the ceiling is not flat, the room is designed to create acoustic reverberation. This sauna room hosts retreats such as Aufguss sessions, offering an experience where you can lose yourself in the sound and steam.
"HAMON" is an installation sauna inspired by the sweat lodges used in Native American rituals. The space features beautiful, programmed ripples of water spreading across the ceiling, and—accompanied by the music of Kengo Tokusashi, a leading figure in sauna music—it offers a soothing experience that brings a sense of inner peace.
"ARC" is a sauna room featuring a unique spiral design that allows you to experience different temperatures and steam levels at varying heights. You can relax in whatever position you like—whether sitting cross-legged or, when space permits, lying down on the spacious seating area.
The “VALO” sauna features a stove installed behind you, allowing you to enjoy the aroma. Essential oils diffused from the walls and the light reflecting off the water’s surface streaming in through the window create a soothing atmosphere. Incidentally, in the hope that you’ll experience the sauna through your senses rather than your thoughts, none of the saunas are equipped with televisions or 12-minute timers.
"PANORAMA" is, as the name suggests, a sauna room featuring a panoramic window. The benches are set high, so your feet don't touch the floor, allowing you to enjoy a feeling of floating.
The women's sauna offers a wide variety of beauty and relaxation programs
Like the men’s bath area, the women’s bath area features a cold-water pool at its center. Here, too, there are two types of pools: the central cold-water pool and a reclining cold-water pool. Additionally, both the men’s and women’s bath areas are fully equipped with drinking fountains and chairs for resting. You can enjoy the sauna in whatever style you prefer.
"MAALI," the women's sauna room, regularly hosts unique retreat sessions featuring scrubs, mud, and herbs. Because a variety of programs are held there, the room is furnished with stools that can be easily moved, rather than the fixed benches commonly found in sauna rooms. Additionally, the floor is tiled to accommodate the mud and scrub retreats, allowing water to be easily drained.
"LEAVES" is a sauna room specializing in herbal treatments. You can enjoy the aroma of fresh herbs placed in a pot atop the sauna stove, as well as essential oils diffused from the walls, all carried by the steam. The distinctive wall patterns were created by Asuka Watanabe, who is also responsible for the overall design direction of Fuji Rock Festival.
Like the men's sauna, "PANORAMA" is a sauna room featuring panoramic windows that offer views of Takanawa.
A dousing shower for cooling off. When you pull the chain, a large amount of water pours down from above. Of course, there are also regular shower stalls.
Enjoy a Private Session! Sauna Room with Whisking Service
At Takanawa SAUNAS, you can reserve a private sauna in advance. It’s available for groups of 1 to 5 people, and men and women can use it together as long as they wear swimsuits.
The private sauna room “HUONE” is designed for whisking treatments and was developed under the supervision of Magu Manpei, a comedian who loves saunas and is a certified whisking master. Whisking is a treatment performed using a bundle of plants called a “whisk.” Mag Manpei and other Whisking Masters with specialized knowledge skillfully control the room’s temperature and humidity, using steam and warm plants to warm the body, stimulate the body’s natural healing powers, and restore balance to both mind and body.
A private space fully equipped with a cold-water bath and a rest area. You can relax and enjoy the comfort here without worrying about anyone else.
A fulfilling break area and restaurant that help you get more done
"NAP" is a space for rest and recovery. After using the sauna, take a 15- to 30-minute break to refresh your body and mind.
The meeting rooms, which are available for a fee, are ideal for meetings and business negotiations. If you use them after a sauna session, you might even be able to close a tough deal.
The lounge also features a workspace. After refreshing your mind and body in the sauna, you’ll likely find your work goes more smoothly. There are also video conferencing booths available for use during web conferences and other meetings.
The lounge also serves as a restaurant, where you can enjoy a plant-based menu curated by Yusuke Nomura, the fourth-generation head chef of “Shojin Ryori Daigo,” which has earned stars in international gourmet guides. The menu features nothing but original creations, such as curry with the aroma of fruits and spices, grilled scallion soy sauce ramen, and spicy potato tortillas.
At the store, you can purchase SAUNAS original merchandise, such as sauna hats, T-shirts, and bags. We also carry merchandise created in collaboration with various creators.
At Takanawa SAUNAS, we offer a variety of programs every day—ranging from classics like the Aufguss to new retreat experiences that are likely to gain popularity in Japan. Our highly trained sauna masters skillfully combine elements such as steam, scent, and sound to provide a diverse range of retreat experiences in a safe and comfortable environment. Since the sauna masters guide you through every retreat, even beginners can feel at ease. Start by trying out the retreat that piques your interest and find the program that suits you best. Of course, we also recommend spending your time in your own unique way—whether that means simply enjoying the sauna, savoring “sauna meals,” or even getting some work done. Because this is a stay-in facility, you’re free to relax at your own pace throughout the day. Takanawa SAUNAS—where you can escape the information overload of daily life and enjoy the sauna while connecting with your mind and body—is the perfect sauna facility for modern people weary from the demands of everyday life.
