An Encounter with Evangelion Transcending Time! The 30th Anniversary Exhibition "ALL OF EVANGELION" Opens at Roppongi Hills Observatory
The anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion, which began airing in 1995, caused a social phenomenon with its enigmatic story and cutting-edge visual expression. The series rebooted in 2007 as the Rebuild of Evangelion film series. Following the massive hits of 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone, 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance, and 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo, the series reached a conclusion with Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time in 2021. Evangelion, which has always been at the forefront of the times, gaining new fans and being loved by a wide range of generations, celebrates the 30th anniversary of its broadcast in 2025. In this commemorative year, the "ALL OF EVANGELION" 30th Anniversary Exhibition, boasting one of the largest scales in Evangelion history, has opened at Tokyo City View on the 52nd floor of Roppongi Hills Mori Tower. Through a variety of exhibits, we will unravel the charm of "Eva," which has had a tremendous impact on pop culture not only in Japan but around the world.
Evangelion Unit-01 Descends on the Sky Observatory
Photo spots where you can capture the spectacular view are also set up inside the venue.
Taking the elevator up to the 52nd floor of Roppongi Hills Mori Tower, a breathtaking panoramic view expands before you, overlooking the city center and even the horizon beyond. Against the backdrop of this spectacular view, a large figure of Evangelion Unit-01 welcomes visitors.
This is the only venue where you can enjoy the exhibition while overlooking Tokyo below.
The Unit-01 floating in the air is nothing short of divine. Nana Ogawa from The Asahi Shimbun Company, who planned the "ALL OF EVANGELION" 30th Anniversary Exhibition, explains, "The concept of this exhibition is a 'festival.' Based on the concept of celebrating the 30th anniversary of Evangelion, which has been loved all over the world since its broadcast began in October 1995, together with visitors, we cover everything from the eve of the TV series' birth to Neon Genesis Evangelion and its theatrical versions, and the four films of the Rebuild of Evangelion series, in the order of their release."
Check out Unit-01 backed by the sparkling night view of Tokyo.
During our visit, bright sunlight poured in, and the contrast of the unit's purple and green shone against the blue sky, but the presentation after sunset is said to be exceptional as well. After sunset, a special lighting effect exclusive to the Tokyo venue of this exhibition is applied, brilliantly lighting it up as if to celebrate the 30th anniversary. The so-called "magic hour" time slot is also recommended. Sakiko Tsuji from Mori Building Co., Ltd., the organizer of this exhibition, says, "You can enjoy a one-of-a-kind artistic experience where the worldview of Evangelion fuses with the spectacular view of Tokyo transitioning from sunset to nightscape."
Pose Together with the Characters
At the entrance, there is also a spot where you can take a commemorative photo in front of a giant poster for Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance. If you stand in front of the poster holding a placard with the "ALL OF EVANGELION" logo, you can take a memorable picture. During our visit, a line formed as soon as the doors opened. Since congestion is expected during the exhibition period, we asked Ms. Tsuji about times that might be less crowded, and she told us, "Monday through Thursday in the early afternoon, or after 8:00 PM, allows for relatively leisurely viewing."
Deciphering the Eve of Evangelion's Birth from Setting Materials
It is said that trial and error was repeated over several years before the broadcast.
This exhibition consists of a total of 5 chapters, from the Prologue to Chapter 4. The Prologue, "Fetal Movement," mainly exhibits materials from the eve of the birth of Neon Genesis Evangelion. From the numerous detailed setting materials, you can glimpse how the creators brought forth attractive characters and worldviews.
Even character expressions and Angel movements are set in detail.
In the Prologue, many people stopped to appreciate the exhibits carefully. "My impression is that on weekdays, many people come alone to view the exhibition at their own pace. While the main visitor demographic is in their 30s and 40s, we also have many younger visitors in their teens and 20s, and a broad customer base regardless of gender. Recently, visits by inbound tourists are also increasing, and we see people sharing exhibition information on SNS and through word of mouth," says Ms. Tsuji.
The urban structure of Tokyo-3, which serves as the setting for the story, is also determined in detail.
The setting materials contain not only visuals but also numerous detailed notes and instructions to make the work come together, vividly conveying the behind-the-scenes of the production.
The World of the Work Expressed Through Cel Animation and Sound
Replicas of existing background art are exhibited together with the cels of the corresponding cuts.
Chapter 1, "Start-up," exhibits cels used in the 1995 TV series. At that time, images were created by craftsmen painting characters and mecha stroke by stroke with paint on transparent film sheets called cels, layering them over background art, and photographing them. "This exhibition displays approximately 270 hand-painted cels from Neon Genesis Evangelion, which have rarely been shown in exhibitions until now. We have also collected handwritten materials for the subsequent Rebuild of Evangelion series. Although production methods have changed, you can enjoy up close the delicate craftsmanship of animation created by human hands, which remains unchanged from 30 years ago to today," says Ms. Ogawa.
The TV series has a total of 26 episodes. Carefully selected cuts from each episode are lined up.
The exhibited cels were reportedly selected from over 10,000 existing cuts with the full cooperation of the Anime Tokusatsu Archive Centre (ATAC), a specified non-profit corporation established to preserve the cultural heritage of anime and tokusatsu for future generations, led by Hideaki Anno, who served as the director of the series.
You will surely be overwhelmed by the power of each individual drawing.
You will be surprised by how finely and carefully everything is drawn, from daily scenes to intense battle scenes. Also, Chapter 2, "Rumbling," is an audio area. You can enjoy parts of valuable audition recordings by the voice actors who played the main characters, storyboards that can be called the blueprints of the visuals, and a compilation of the "Next Episode Previews." "Please also listen closely to the sounds of cicadas, trains, and waves that can be heard in the venue," says Ms. Ogawa.
The Road from the Start to the Conclusion of the Rebuild Series
The Rebuild of Evangelion series was produced by "Studio Khara," established in 2006 by Chief Director Anno.
The exhibition moves into the second half, and Chapter 3, "Dynamism," focuses on the Rebuild of Evangelion series that began in 2007. As the series continued from the release of 1.0 to 2.0 and 3.0, the story showed new developments different from the TV series, and the visual expression also achieved dramatic evolution.
You can catch a glimpse of the production process.
Original drawings and layouts that retain the delicate nuances of hand-drawing are exhibited. "In the Rebuild of Evangelion, cels were hardly used as a production method anymore, and digital work was adopted instead. In addition to materials drawn with pencil, the hologram display of the aerial battleship, which could not have been created without 3DCG, is also one of the highlights," says Ms. Ogawa.
The final chapter, which can be called the culmination of the series, exceeded 10 billion yen in box office revenue.
In Chapter 4, "Fruition, and a New Heartbeat," you can immerse yourself in the world of Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time, which was released in 2021 and became the final chapter of the series.
You can see delicate brushstrokes up close.
Analog pencil lines by the creators' hands are combined with digital technology, sublimating into entrancing visual beauty.
A collage-like display of original drawings.
From the exhibited setting materials and original drawings, it is conveyed that the production staff continued to face the fate of the characters without compromise until the very end.
The autograph board by the production team is also a must-see.
At the end of the exhibition, a board was set up where visitors could write messages on paper and post them. Let's express our passionate thoughts for Eva.
Goods that Tickle Fan Psychology and a Collab Cafe
Goods using original illustrations drawn for this exhibition are lined up.
Beyond the dense exhibition space lies a special goods shop. Attractive items, including T-shirts and clear files produced for this exhibition, are lined up. By the way, an exhibition ticket is required to enter the goods shop. Please note that you cannot enter with just a Tokyo City View observatory ticket.
Items you want to keep on hand as a memento of the 30th anniversary.
Highly recommended among the goods is the official catalog that covers the exhibition content. You can carefully reflect on the numerous valuable materials seen at the venue in your own home.
The cafe opens at 11:00 AM.
If you want to take a break, head to "THE SUN & THE MOON (Cafe)" adjacent to the venue. Here, the 30th Anniversary Exhibition "ALL OF EVANGELION" Collaboration Cafe is open to commemorate the exhibition.
Eva characters are also featured on the tables.
At the cafe, you can enjoy original collaboration menus inspired by characters and famous scenes appearing in the work.
Evangelion Unit-01 piloted by the protagonist Shinji Ikari.
The "Unit-01 Spiced Chicken Curry," which has outstanding impact, recreates the famous scene where Unit-01 tries to forcibly pry open the A.T. Field deployed by an Angel in the story. Colorful paprika powder is scattered around the plate, reproducing the pattern of the A.T. Field. The basic taste is mild and easy to eat, and it contains large chunks of chicken, providing a satisfying feeling.
The orange evokes the color of Evangelion Unit-00 piloted by Ayanami.
"Rei Ayanami's Chiffon Cake Dessert" is a beautiful plate unified with white and light blue, Rei Ayanami's image colors. Centered on a fluffy Earl Grey chiffon cake, it is accompanied by refreshing orange and jelly, spreading an elegant sweetness. The accompanying sherbet contains small ramune candies, providing an accent with a strange texture that fizzes in your mouth. "The collaboration cafe has a lineup of popular menus. Other items, such as Asuka Shikinami Langley's Tomato Pasta and Kaworu Nagisa's 'The Time Has Come' Purple Flower Soda, which colorfully express the worldview of the work and the personalities of the characters, have been well received by many fans," says Ms. Tsuji.
A Christmas Tree Coloring the Observation Area
With a ticket to this exhibition, all observation areas are available for use. Currently, a Christmas tree based on an authentic design has appeared in the Sky Gallery in the central area of Tokyo City View. The winter observatory event "Sky Christmas 2025" is being held until December 25th. At night, it becomes a magical space with the night view and the tree, so why not turn back and visit before going to the shop? Christmas dinner is also being served at "THE SUN & THE MOON (Restaurant)" on the same floor.
